Launched in 1967, the 1665 has been designed in partnership with the French company COMEX, specialized in the deepwater submarine works. To meet the needs, its case was equipped with a valve allowing gases to escape during the decompression rather than to destroy the watch.

During the first ten years of production, the 1665 had a dial called 'double red' mentioning on two lines and in red ’Sea-Dweller' and 'Submariner 2000'. In 1977, Rolex decided to change the dial for one with the only mention 'Sea-Dweller' in white. For this reason, some collectors call this watch the 'Great White'.

Its serial number dates the production of this watch in 1979. The dial is a ‘Mark I’ (with straight ‘ft’, and not tilted). This watch has been serviced in 2011 by Rolex. During this service, the dial and hands were preserved. 

Oyster steel case 40mm in diameter and 16,80mm thick, caseback engraved 'Rolex Patent Oyster Gas Escape Valve', Triplock winding crown signed Rolex, domed plastic crystal tropic 39, black dial marked ‘swiss-T<25’, painted markers, full tritium, smooth rehaut, movement 1575 certified chronometer, bidirectional bezel with black insert, Oyster bracelet 93150 (12 brushed links) with Fliplock clasp & end links 580/585.

The watch comes with original box and Rolex service papers:
-service warranty card Rolex dated 09/2011 and its booklet;
-booklet 'your rolex oyster' 579.22 Eng;
-sea-horse outer box & Rolex green box 11.00.2;
-calendar Rolex 1980-1981.

Our opinion: The Sea-Dweller is the Rolex professional diver's watch. A little heavier and thicker than the Submariner, the 1665 remains comfortable to wear. Here is a beautiful SD 1665! In original condition and serviced by Rolex in 2011.

Lancée en 1967, la référence 1665 fut développée en partenariat avec COMEX, une société française spécialisée dans les travaux sous-marins en grande profondeur. Pour répondre aux besoins, son boitier fut équipé d’une valve permettant aux gaz de s’échapper lors de la décompression plutôt que de détruire la montre.

Durant les dix premières années de production, la 1665 avait un cadran dit ‘double rouge’ car mentionnant sur deux lignes et en rouge ’Sea-Dweller’ et ‘ Submariner 2000’. En 1977, Rolex décida de changer le cadran. Désormais, la 1665 portera un cadran avec la seule mention ‘Sea-Dweller’ d’une écriture blanche, d’où son surnom de ‘Great White’.

Le numéro de série de cette montre situe sa production vers 1979. Elle dispose du cadran Mark I (‘ft’ droit, et non pas couché). La montre a été révisée par Rolex en 2011, sans que le cadran ni les aiguilles n’aient été remplacés.

Notre avis : La Sea-Dweller est la montre de plongée professionnelle de la gamme Rolex. Un peu plus lourde et épaisse qu'une Submariner, elle n'en reste pas moins confortable au porté. Voici une belle SD 1665 en état d’origine et révisée par ROLEX en 2011.
